Music can easily bring back memories. It brings it back so vividly, like Usher’s music does for me. Especially his hits from 2010-2012. They remind me of my time clubbing by myself in Australia. That time I danced till the clubs closed at 3 a.m., went on to the bars till 5 a.m. to dance some more. After this the journey it was onwards to the sportsbar to watch a game. Any game, until the first breakfast place would open. Every few days this clubbing ritual would hit my repeat key. It was such a free feeling, going wherever I wanted to and leaving whenever I wanted to. Going out solo every so often is an experience I can recommend to you.
During this clubbing time of my life, Usher’s hits were played everywhere. Songs like OMG and Twisted made a crowd jump up and scream with enthusiasm. Pretty much everyone would get on their feet to dance, jump or just move somewhat.
A few weeks ago I learned that Usher was touring through Europe thanks to facebook, and would do a show in Amsterdam. I didn’t hesitate. That ticket was mine! Normally I would wait and ask whom of my friends wanted to join me. Thinking the concert was going to sell out quickly and my friends take forever to decide on these matters, I decided against waiting for them.
My friends are obviously lovely people, otherwise I wouldn’t be friends with them. But their lifes have changed now most of them have children. Spontaneous dates have become rare and I knew that they probably had to go through a process of deliberating with their partners and/or find a babysitter and then there’s always the money issue. Can we afford a concert ticket? This process can take up several hours to days even. No, thank you.
However, the concert did not sell out here in small town Amsterdam! The night before the concert date my curiosity took over and I checked the seating availability. There were still some open spots left, all scattered throughout the stadium, but still. It left me baffled for a minute that a name as big as Usher, did not completely sell out. Oh well, my goal was to enjoy his music performance not matter how many people would show up. And enjoyed I did! The show was well executed and everything began on time. There were no long pauses or too much talk. It was all about the music, quality singing and dancing. And wow, the dancing was impressive!

The crowd took a bit to warm up. It might be a Dutch thing. It’s like they’re a whole lot of introverted people. Enjoying themselves quietly with smiles on their faces and cell phones in their hands. They do know the cues, the obvious moments of when to yell, which lasted a few seconds only at first. Luckily after about an hour they were all warmed up and let themselves go, like me. I’m more extraverted and the screaming, yelling, singing and even dancing along is what makes a concert more interactive and worthwhile for me. The thing that separates the experience from seeing it on television.
Usher’s concert was two hours of pure entertainment for me, bringing back good old memories and creating awesome new ones.
