Accepting help vs accepting money

Lets say you need to change a tyre on your car. It’s a difficult task for you as it’s a huge tire and it will definitely take time and strength to get the job done. Your friends who aware of this, immediately offer help, without you even needing to ask. Would you accept their help?

Let’s say your house almost got burned down. You manage to rescue about one suitcase filled with stuff. As you didn’t have insurance, it is going to be quite a task to get through the month allright. You might just manage it, next to all the organising and finding a temporary place to stay. Your friends who are aware of this, immediately offer help, without you even needing to ask. They are willing to give you clothes, pots, pans and other equipment they can spare and to get you started again. Would you accept this help? Probably yes.

But what if they would offer you money instead? Would that change things in the way you accept someones aid?

These are the things  I wondered about when a friend of mine turned down money from others, despite losing most of his stuff in a house fire. His friends, who love him a lot and see him for the giving person he is, quickly set up a online fund asking everyone who could to chip in. The goal was to raise $5000,- It was an easy succes. Everyone happy, or not?

My friend didn’t want to accept the money. Instead he asked everyone to take back their donation or he would donate it to the fire brigade. I was baffled. What kind of act is this? Is this about being noble? Cause, quite frankly I don’t get it. All these people put love and energy into helping you and you just say: No, take it back. All the happiness that went into helping out a person in need is hereby dismissed. Obviously he did not mean it in a bad way and I’m even more convinced that none of the people who donated will consider it to be.

But why do we have so much trouble taking money for help? Money people donated because they could miss it. Money otherwise spend on perhaps the plenty unnecessary things available in this life. Money that does you no harm by accepting it. Money spent on a cause that makes everyone happy they contributed to. Like the case of this man from Detroit walking 21 miles to his job everyday for ten years, from the moment his car broke down. A 19 year old guy set up a online fund for him and raised more money they could have dreamed of. He even got a car donated from a major car manufacturer. The Detroit man didn’t like it… he loved it! The happiness from this good deed was felt by many in their heart. What would it have been like if the guy would have said to all: please take back your donations or I’ll donate it to the bus company. What would you make of that?

I’m not sure. Feel free to offer your light on this matter.Lets say you need to change a tyre on your car.
