Indulgence vs Health

My aunt got a bit frustrated with her children for not getting it. For not getting her point. When you have all this new knowledge and know what the better thing is to do for yourself, why not do it?! She doesn’t get it.

We are talking about food. And about all this new knowledge we get easily presented due to social media. It taught us about refined sugars (ref.sugars) and the negative plus addictive impact they can have on our bodies.

People who tried to stay away from refined sugars for a longer period of time, probably know all about the addictive part of ref.sugars.They experienced the cravings, and withdrawal symptoms like shaking. Some people make it through this and others can only cope by eating more ref.sugars again. Like some find the only cure against a hangover to drink more alcohol…

My cousin is one of those people that fights of her sugar cravings by eating more sugar. Defending herself by saying her body needs it, otherwise she will get the shakes. Does she not know that it is the withdrawal symptom or does she simply don’t want to know? Her mother told her all about ref.sugars, so how come despite knowing how bad it is for her, she won’t change her eating habits? She tells me she is stubborn. But why? What is she trying to proof with intentionally eating unhealthy? (She also doesn’t eat vegetables.) Is she trying to proof to other that she is special. So special, that she will stay healthy despite eating unhealthy. Very unhealthy.

I figured that my cousins focus on food is different from her mothers in the way that for my cousin it is all about indulgence whereas her mothers focus is more on health. My aunts focus on health motivates her to change her diet. My cousins focus on indulgence motivates her to keep looking for the food that bring her pure enjoyment, only food that tastes good to her. And as long nothing is bothering her, she is quite content keeping this her habit. Funnily enough, the way you taste food changes over time. As you get older your taste buds change, but theres also something as creating a new habit. By not eating ref.sugars for a long time, your taste will adjust to the new foods and eventually you will like it. (Perhaps with some help from cookbooks!) It actually happens to a lot of people that they don’t enjoy food with ref.sugars in it after quitting it for a while. Guess my cousin never got to that point.

She is very young, and has no physical complaints whatsoever. So for now it is indulgence over health. Obviously, I wish her to stay healthy and in a way I hope that she might just be that one person that gets away with an unhealthy diet. At this point I estimate that it is very unlikely to stay in good shape this way and can only hope she will find a better balance between her indulging in food and eating healthier.
